Summary:
Every coaching, even if it is just one session, needs an objective. Otherwise, it’s just a chat. In this article, I will tell you what an objective might be, giving you examples of coaching objectives.

“Make sure it doesn’t turn into a hairdresser’s conversation!” my mentor Benno once said.

A hairdresser conversation is one of those conversations I have with the nice ladies or gentlemen at the hairdresser salon. They always ask if I have a nice day off work at my favorite hairdresser when I plop down in the comfortable chair on a weekday morning or afternoon. That is the start of a pleasant conversation that goes in all directions.

This is, of course, not the intention of a coaching session. It can be a nice conversation and focus, or a goal helps. You can ensure this by having a good objective at the start of a conversation. It is useful if you already have one yourself, but a coach can help you make the objective clearer.

The coaching objective can be in different areas of your life such as career, wealth/money, personal growth, fitness/health, friends/family, or love.

To make the objective and the coaching sessions clearer, it is important to find out where you are coming from, where you are now, and where you are going. Then it will also become clear what is holding you back.

Where are you coming from?

It is important to take a moment to reflect on what has happened and what steps you have already taken. Are there things that have or have not worked? Who are involved? How long does this play?

Where are you now?

Then take a moment to consider where you are now. Is there uncertainty, sadness, fear, or are you curious about the next steps?

Where are you going?

Finally, visualize where you want to go. Is it another job? A new relationship? Better health? Different behavior? New skills? Try to imagine what such a life looks like and who is involved.

Usually, I do this in the first session, but you can also prepare it yourself. To help you with this, I always have a stack of photos at hand. You can then choose which image best fits the different phases described above.

Now that I coach more often online, it is more difficult for you to look in that card stack. I came up with the following solution for that. You can go to the following website with free images. You choose three images that best symbolize your phases. An advantage is that you can easily save them for the rest of your journey.

Examples of objectives

The purpose of a concrete objective will help you (and me) to gain more clarity and focus. Examples of objectives I hear in my practice are the following:

  • How can I make my dreams come true?
  • How can I develop myself personally?
  • What are my talents, and how can I use them effectively?
  • How can I experience less stress due to unclear expectations?
  • What’s stopping me from taking the next step, and what can I do about it?
  • Why do I keep doing […], and how can I change that?
  • How can I stay on my path and be a strong partner and father to my family?
  • What next step should I take that is in line with what I want in life?

A coach does not answer your questions but will work with you to find answers and opportunities to achieve your goals. The responsibility to achieve this and to become aware of yourself lies with you.

How can coaching help you?

Coaching gives you more clarity on your current behavior and desired goals. It can lead to new behavior, new skills, and meaning. You can discover your WHY and know how to get the best out of life. I am convinced that you can experience more fulfillment and joy in life as a result.
