I am an incredibly lucky guy. I live in a great house, am healthy, have a loving family, and enjoy my work very much. This makes me very grateful.
I would consider these examples luck. But luck often washes up. I was also very lucky to find my first engineering job through a friend I met in my student club. My wife and I found our first dream house in Utrecht through an acquaintance of hers. I met my best friend at a business event over 10 years ago, and another friend introduced me to the Haka. This Māori dance is very special to me, and after studying it, I am lucky to dance it with thousands of people every year. It excites me so much!
The chances that you‘re the lucky winner of a lottery ticket here in the Netherlands are one out of seven million. Is this luck you can influence?
This has nothing to do with luck; it’s about creating the right circumstances that help you be more successful. Perhaps I have been doing that unconsciously, but there is a way to achieve more success than simply waiting for the right business opportunity, job, or partner.
In a recent podcast by Simon Sinek, I heard Professor Suzy Welch discuss a concept of success. She teaches at NYU Stern School of Business, and one of her most attended classes is “Becoming You.” In just three days, you’ll discover your purpose in life and what it means to be your most authentic self to live life more intentionally—a class I would love to take.
Professor Suzy Welch talks about the PIE theory of long-term success.
People
You can influence success by knowing the right people. It is about the quality of your relationships with people, your connections. It is about how authentic you are, how trustworthy you are, and how well you listen. I knew Rudy (not his real name) from the student club. He already worked at an engineering company as a hydrogeologist. He asked me if I wanted to join that company as well, and I did. It was my first job after graduating from college.
To achieve greater success in life, meeting new people is essential. Consider attending networking events, joining a sports club, singing in a choir, or starting a book club. Be curious, smile, and comment on the new and beautiful shoes of people you meet. Make a connection; One of my favorite questions lately is to ask people what they love to do rather than what they do for a living. I meet people who start to talk about their boat and how it brings them peace to sail on the water after a busy day.
Ideas
For even greater success, you need ideas and thoughts that are engaging and interesting. It’s about the quality of your ideas, how original they are, and how you champion other people’s ideas. It is also about relating to a customer with a question or challenge and then coming up with an idea for a solution.
A few years ago, I trained my creative muscle to generate ten ideas every day—ideas for my business, health, relationships, and spiritual life. My creative muscle became stronger. It’s getting lazier today, thanks to the help of ChatGPT, but I do use it to generate more ideas after I’ve come up with ten already.
Execute
That is the final key to achieving greater success in life. You have to go out and meet people, discuss your ideas, and take the first small steps to bring your ideas to life. I think this is the most difficult step and takes the most work. This is about getting things done. So, I make it a habit to do something daily towards my goals and live my WHY. It’s all about integrity and doing what you say you’re going to do.
Live your WHY
I am convinced that living your WHY helps you to become successful in life. Your WHY is your contribution that impacts the world. A WHY statement is always positive, unending, and unique.

My WHY statement is:
I facilitate so that others can elevate themselves and experience more love in their lives.
It is like fuel for me to do those things that result in more success, fulfillment, joy, and love. It propels me forward to meet people, generate ideas (for blog articles), and execute them.
