In my previous article, I wrote about how to recharge during the holidays. I just returned from a nice holiday in Albania and Greece and am fully recharged.
During my holidays, I wondered how to live my WHY. At work, it seems easier to do so because there are goals, deadlines, and workshops I am passionate about that align with my WHY.
It can be challenging to keep your WHY alive during the holiday. This frustrates me. Sometimes, I am less happy, fulfilled, or I get irritated at the smallest things because I don’t consciously live my WHY or purpose. Do you recognize this as well? My newest blog gives you seven tips on how to make the most of your holiday.
Start with Intention
You can start by asking yourself what the intention is of your holiday. Is it to relax? To have a special time with loved ones? Maybe to become fitter? To connect with nature? Or do you intend to work on personal growth?
It was eye-opening for me to reconnect with my WHY (‘I facilitate so others can elevate themselves and experience more love‘) every morning by saying this statement aloud or in silence to myself. That helped me make decisions for the day and enjoy it even more. It helped me focus on my WHY. Start every day with an intention that aligns with your WHY.
Celebrate and enjoy
When we left for our holiday, my mom asked me to enjoy it. I tend to get rigid, especially when things turn out differently than expected.
You are allowed to relax, celebrate moments, and enjoy yourself while on holiday—even when things don’t go as planned. You don’t have to be serious and rigid to keep your WHY alive all the time. Enjoying the moment can be a way to connect with your WHY.
Stay open to inspiration
When I am relaxed, I am open to inspiration. I hear and see things to write or talk about. You can do this by looking out of a window while traveling, meeting fellow travelers, reading a book, or listening to a podcast.
Cultivate rituals
You probably have habits or rituals at work. Examples are fetching coffee, making a to-do list, and checking email. Bring small rituals into your holiday, too. My day starts with coffee, writing in my dream diary, contemplation, and planning the day with my family.
We always play a game when we have to wait for dinner to be served. This is fun and stimulates meaningful conversations.
Do random acts of kindness
My purpose is to serve life and make life easier for others. I feel unfulfilled by just sitting somewhere and being served. Things that give me joy, enthuse me, and make me feel alive are the following acts of kindness:
Help someone by opening a door, carrying groceries, or volunteering locally. The latter deepens your holiday’s sense of purpose.
Give tips. People who deserve it will be very happy.
Pick up trash while hiking. During one hike, I picked up a soda can filled with ants. Because the ants were biting me, I threw the can far away…The next can was empty.
Pass on items you no longer need. We often give our leftover foods to homeless people or leave items such as a parasol or water shoes at the last house we stayed at.
Clean up when you leave a bathroom, hotel, or restaurant.
After leaving an attraction, restaurant, or hotel, give positive feedback and reviews. Please see ours here and here.
Pay it forward. Unintentionally, we left several soda cans in a cool stream near where we had camped one night. I hope someone enjoyed a cool drink on a hot day. But you can also buy coffee for the person behind you.
Smile at people you don’t know. Often, people give the biggest smile back. The challenge is to keep on smiling when people are grumpy.

Engage in the local culture
Albanian is a very challenging language. We managed to say the basics like ‘falemminderit‘ (thank you). Although we had difficulty expressing ourselves (a translation app helped us), the locals appreciated our effort. We had a local guide who told us more about Corfu. Connecting with people enriches the holiday experience and supports the local community.
Journal
My wife made a wonderful journal with pictures and stories of our holiday, and I made an online journal. Looking back at these journals, I recognize moments that aligned with my WHY. To be more conscious about your WHY, you can have a WHY journal listing all your experiences that align with your WHY. It is a great way to reflect at the end of the day.
